Industrial Manufacturing Report — February 2021

Brothers and Sisters,

I hope you are all well and staying safe. Here’s a quick update on the Industrial and Manufacturing side of things.

Kinkisharyo is winding down and delivered its final P3010 light rail car to Metro in mid-January. While the workforce has dwindled down, many of our members have successfully gained employment in the aerospace industry in the Antelope Valley. Kinkisharyo has also placed a bid with LA Metro for a P2550 contract that would secure jobs at the Palmdale plant and we hope to know by March if their bid was successful. The good news is that we have secured an LOU with Kinkisharyo which means any future contracts awarded by Kinkisharyo in Palmdale will be done by a union IBEW Local 11 workforce.

Everything is moving along at the Covanta plant in Long Beach. Back in November, we were awarded an arbitration victory that made the company fix its time-keeping system and making sure night shift members were paid overtime correctly. Through this win, we were able to negotiate a night differential and remove language in the CBA that made our members yearly increases merit based. Now all IBEW Local 11 members at the Long Beach facility will receive an annual raise. This will affect 13 of our 43 members at that facility.

There are a few things in the works now for both Kinkisharyo and Covanta and we are working hard to make sure our members at both facilities get the representation that they deserve. I look forward to updating everyone soon about exciting new happenings in these two industries. You and your families stay safe!

In solidarity,
Kristian Mendoza
